OK. I am still something of a Nihongo newbie, but I've managed to put together the entire thing.
γͺγγ§... (Nande...) This one is fairly straightforward, and simply asks "why?"
γͺγγ§εγ― (Nande boku wa) If taken as a single sentence, this would be asking "why me?" (at least according to Google Translate). But taken in the context of what is going on, it's clear that this is part of a greater sentence. So without further ado...
δ»²ιγε°γγγ¦γγ (Nakama ga kuwarete iru) I know nakama from TV Tropes. Kuwareru is the passive form of kuwu, which means "to eat". Basically, it means "my friends are being eaten". The kanji in question took several tries to get right in sljfaq. I am a self-admitted gaijin and suck at doing kanji, and my drawing skills with the mouse are not the greatest.
ε ζ―γ (Koukei o) Koukei means, roughly "sight" or "spectacle". The "o" is meant as part of another part of the sentence. By the way, that second kanji after the one for "light" was a BITCH to find in sljfaq, as it defied all my attempts to hand-draw with the mouse, and I eventually had to look through the radicals to find it.
ηΊγγ¦-- (Nagamete --) Nagameru means "to gaze at", "to view" or "to watch".
So it's time to put the sentence together.
Nande boku wa nakama ga kuwarete iru koukei o nagamete -- ?! About as nearly as I can translate it is "Why am I just watching as my friends are being eaten?" While I had some help from Google Translate, my main inspiration for the translation was the scene from Attack on Titan which this is a divergence from, which is basically Armin being scared shitless and too petrified to help his friends as they're getting nommed down by the man-eating giants.
Someone more skilled in moonspeak than I am may want to look over what I did.
You know what I think? I think Guts is actually dead in this series of comics. At death, he was offered by some sort of kind deity not so much an afterlife, but a chance to be someone who, instead of spreading his will via the sword, saves people by it. A sort of "savior" figure in the most literal sense. He doesn't so much as go around preaching, but his spirit will be called on at the most desperate of moments, giving sage wisdom and showing the ones he saved by their own feet that they can walk towards a future without trudging into self-destruction or an abrupt end.
If anything, this takes place after Berserk. A good end or bad that's met is supplemented by the fact that Guts, for once, wanders by his own will instead of a compulsion - to do good and give the downtrodden a fighting chance.
tl;dr He becomes a multiversal Obi-Wan who's not afraid to let those who deserve it have it and the ones who need that fighting chance get one.
Why...?Whyam Ijust watching asmy friendsare being eaten -- ?!
