A species of flightless bird native to Africa, the ostrich is distinctive with its long, scruffy-feathered neck and powerful two-toed legs. Males have black body plumage with white accents; females are brown.
Ostriches weigh 139β320 lbs and can run up to 43 mph. The only other extant ostrich species is the Somali or blue-necked ostrich, comparable in size. These two species are the largest birds in the world.
